Dandy Villas is pleased to present their new acquisition, of the war-towered Zoaki, in Nomia, in the imperious Mani of the Peloponnese.
This war tower is one of the towers of Mani, a unique folk architectural work, a stone structure influenced by similar architectural works of Venice, which were adopted in their area by the Mani soldiers - after their stay in the Italian army.
It is one of the 800+ towers that have been recognized internationally by Unesco as cultural heritage sites. Unfortunately, the 300 out of the 800 towers have already become ruins that can no longer be saved.
Our tower, the Tower of Nikolaos Zoakos, known in the area fondly as the Tower of Zoanon, was built in the 17th century. It is 9 meters high and extends on 3 levels: ground floor, first floor and second floor, with the large bedroom of the last floor communicating with the terrace.
There, in this war tower, Zoakos himself lived with his family: his 5 children, his 3 sons and his 2 daughters.
The tower house has on its outer sides - under the west and east window - the well-known Mani "zematistres or katachioustres" which could revive in wartime the habit of women to take matters into their own hands and attack the enemy, throwing hot oil or water from above.
So simple, so efficient.

In the tower house of Zoaki you will see the well-known "ntoufekotroupes" (embrasures / loopholes), signs of the perpetual preparation of the people of Mani for war. They remind us that in the minds and hearts of all the people of Mani freedom was, is and will be the highest ideal.
In Mani they did not only love freedom. They loved and respected the woman, the mother, so Mani was proven to be a matriarchal society.
The owner of the house, Zoakos's wife, was honored, due to her special temperament and her dynamism, a member of the Gerontiki, the informal council that resolved the disputes of the people of Mani, in the absence of official courts at the time.
The family of Zoaki belonged to the class of the Soilidons, a, say, upper class that is said to have their roots in the Komnenians of Byzantium. The Soilidons had the right to use weapons and live in tower houses, while the "Ahamnoi", the most humble class that worked for them, did not.
The house is a living memory of all the experiences of the owner family and her descendants.
Continuing the description we will try to explain the spirit of the times, the peculiarities of the house, the hidden points, the ones that in our opinion are worth illuminating.
Upon entering the house you are welcomed by the fireplace, the so-called "light corner", where the family cooked the daily simple and unpretentious food in the "tsoukali" (pot). The low openings of the corridors and the towers in general had one purpose: to make it difficult for the unexpected visitor to enter easily, to be forced to bend over and thus to become prey in the hands of the hosts. If the hosts wanted to welcome him he is fine, otherwise, any unexpected visitor would be badly chased away, or worse.
After the light corner, ie the fireplace, through a low – be careful here - arch you can see the main toilet, bathroom and the first bedroom that leads to the stone courtyard with the pond - jacuzzi so you can cool off and enjoy a modern comfort in a such an old building, tying - as we believe - harmoniously yesterday with today.
The communication through the floors is done as it used to, through wooden stairs, the "waterfalls", they are called so because they are steep enough to save space for the main house, the rooms. Going up to the first floor you will find the living room with two armchairs that can be turned into a bed and a small toilet.
From the living room you can go out to the large balcony with the dining table for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Above, at the second floor, you will find the second bedroom with its own toilet.
The front doors of the houses remain in the courtyard, guarded. It was forbidden to be accessible from the street or from an alley. Necessary condition on the one hand, for not easy access of the "enemy" and on the other hand, so that the strong air does not enter the house.
Through the fauna of the area, it impressively completes the admittedly special, but emotionally powerful travel experience, the great attraction of the area: the night concert of howls from the jackals of the remote surrounding mountains.
Do not be frightened! It is a useful species that is now endangered.

1. Operating Period May – October
2. Please do not enter the pool/ jacuzzi wearing sunscreen or any other type of body oil
/ cream.
3. Please use the Showers before entering the pool / jacuzzi
4. Bathing suites must be worn to use the pool/ jacuzzi. Swimming in clothes or shoes is not permitted
5. Children under the age of 12 must be escorted into the pool / jacuzzi and kept under
constant supervision
6. Pets are not allowed in the pool / jacuzzi
7. For your safety, running, diving and playing with balls in the pool / jacuzzi area are
not allowed.
8. Please wait for 3 hours after eating or consuming alcohol before entering the pool/
Jacuzzi.
9. Those who do not know how to swim are strictly forbidden to use the pool / jacuzzi.
10. People who have open sores, suffering from epilepsy, or have any contagious disease or virus are not allowed in the pool / Jacuzzi.
